Heart diseases are common in both developed and developing countries, and India is no exception. The death rate due to heart diseases has been rising across India over the last couple of decades. It has shot up by 34 percent, from 155.7 deaths per 1 lakh population in 1990 to 209.1 deaths in 2016.

Earlier, the same stents were available in the range of Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.98 lakh (drug eluting) and Rs 30,000 to Rs 75,000 (bare metal). The hidden costs added to people’s woes, making it difficult for a common man to afford the stent. But, it is possible for most to afford these now.
On the other hand, what needs to be seen is whether the revised pricing will lead to high quality stents disappearing from the market. Although most patients would be glad with the mere idea of being able to afford a stent, there is still a section of the society that will give importance to quality stents, regardless of the price.
