Stomach Ache Symptoms and Treatment

What Causes Stomach Aches?

Stomach aches are caused by eating too much or too little food, intestinal gas, or a mild viral infection. A child who has recurring stomach aches should always be examined by a doctor. Repeated stomach aches may result from colic, constipation, or urinary tract infection. If there are additional symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and/or blood in the child’s stools, the child may have a chronic intestinal illness such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or celiac disease. Children who are unable to verbalize their feelings of discomfort or stress often will express their discomfort by having stomach aches or headaches.

Treatment for Stomach Aches

Colic
Colic generally improves over time. No medicine has been shown to improve colic and there isn’t one treatment that works for all babies. Do make sure that your baby is getting enough to eat. Some infants may have a sensitivity to dairy proteins, so if you’re breastfeeding, avoid eating milk, cheese, and butter for a week, and if you’re bottle-feeding, try giving your child a soy-based formula. If your baby’s condition improves, reintroduce dairy products after 14 days and see if the colic returns. Weigh your baby periodically to make sure that he is eating enough to gain weight. To prevent your baby from swallowing air, make sure that he is in a comfortable position when breastfeeding; if you’re bottle-feeding, try different types of bottles to see which ones minimize swallowed air.
You can give your baby a massage, but do not overstimulate him, which can make him feel more unsettled. Try carrying and rocking your baby or swaddling him with a blanket and letting him lie quietly in the dark. Some babies sleep better after a warm bath or become calmer with a pacifier; others respond well to singing, music, or monotonous sounds (a washing machine or vacuum cleaner). Other infants may calm down the repetitive movements of a car ride or a swing.

Constipation

A healthy diet is the key to preventing constipation. Have your child eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to get enough fiber, and give her plenty of fluids — water or juices — to drink. For constipated babies on formula, try adding 2 to 3 teaspoonfuls of prune juice or corn syrup for each 4 oz of formula. With older children, avoid meat, sugar, and milk or other dairy products because they can cause constipation. Children over 12 months old should not drink more than 16 to 24 oz of milk in 24 hours. Some children may have a sensitivity to milk, so their condition should improve after milk is eliminated from their diet. Give your child calcium-fortified soy milk to make sure she gets enough calcium.
Teach your child good toilet habits. Start toilet training as soon as your child shows the motivation for this. Use the time after meals for a trip to the toilet. Set up an area in the bathroom just for your child and use rewards as an incentive for the child. For older children, consuming prune juice and fibrous fruits (pears, apricots, and peaches) may provide relief. A warm bath can also help your child relax before using the toilet. Eastern India Intensifies Dengue Surveillance


Dengue has widened its grip across India in the last couple of years. The number of deaths resulting from outbreaks of this disease has been increasing, especially in densely-populated areas of the country.
More than half the Indian states were affected by the deadly disease in 2017. Delhi, Maharasthra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Kerala were the worst-affected regions. To address the dengue situation in Eastern India, primarily West Bengal, AMRI Hospitals in Kolkata has started an awareness campaign on social media, with the tag #AMRIagainstDengue, as well as created adequate medical facilities to address patients afflicted with the disease.
The disease, which hits its peak between July and November, has a lot of serious implications not just for the health of individuals but also for healthcare facilities. This year as well, the conditions are pointing towards a possible outbreak in Eastern India. Aedesaegypti mosquitoes are responsible for spreading dengue. They breed in stagnant, fresh water. When the mosquito bites a person, the virus is passed into the blood stream, causing complications.
A person only gets symptoms after 7 to 10 days of getting bitten by an infected mosquito. It causes severe joint pain, nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, bleeding from gums, nose or ear.
Some patients also develop hemorrhagic fever that may cause death from shock or even cause multiple-organ failure. These complications make it a deadly disease.
In the last few years, dengue outbreaks were reported from a number of countries across the tropics, putting 3.5 billion people at risk of infection.
Around 390 million people get infected with dengue in more than 100 countries. Children and the elderly are more vulnerable to this disease.
According to the medical practitioners at AMRI Hospitals, early management of symptoms can prevent complications. People often get treated symptomatically, which is good.
There is a need to get tested if symptoms last for 2–3 days or get worse with every minute. Although dengue has no cure, the symptoms can be managed if things are controlled at the earliest.

How to Stop a Silent Heart Attack

Silent heart attacks may masquerade as nasty heartburn, a bad case of stomach flu, an achy arm or weird fatigue. The only way to uncover one is with an electrocardiogram (ECG)—a test that tracks electrical activity—or another heart-imaging test that looks for signs of damage after the fact. That’s exactly what researchers from Wake Forest School of Medicine did, sticking ECG electrodes on the chests of 9,498 women and men several times over nine years as part of a major, on-going study. What they discovered was that while 386 study volunteers had conventional heart attacks that sent them to the hospital, another 317 had silent heart attacks so quiet they escaped notice. Those 317 silent heart attack survivors are three times more likely than people who didn’t have any type of heart attack to die later from heart-related problems. And while men were more likely to face one of these stealth attacks, women were more likely to die in the aftermath.
With more advanced testing, silent heart attack numbers could be even higher. In a high-tech study from Iceland, researchers used cardiac MRI tests to take detailed pictures of the hearts of 936 people. The researchers found signs that silent attacks were almost twice (1.7 times) as common as conventional heart attacks.

As these reports reveal the staggering heart-damaging numbers, here’s what you need to know.
Just as they do for a not-so-silent one. If your numbers aren’t in the healthy zones, get serious about following a healthy diet. You know the drill: plenty of produce, whole grains, lean protein, plus good fats and low-fat or fat-free dairy. Banish added sugars and syrups as well as most saturated and all trans fats from your diet. Walk a minimum of 30 minutes daily (aiming for 10,000 steps) and make time for stress reduction. If your doc recommends medications, take them as directed while you make healthy lifestyle changes. And don’t smoke.
Don’t ignore whispers (or shouts) of trouble.
Diabetes, heart disease, congestive heart failure and pain when you walk (due to narrowed arteries in your legs) seriously elevate your risk for a silent heart attack. And silent heart attacks aren’t actually symptom-free, but the red flags are easy to write off. Even though blood flow’s been cut off to part of your heart, you may chalk up your odd symptoms to one too many burritos, over-doing it at the gym, a bad night’s sleep or a stomach bug.
If you have chest or abdominal discomfort that feels like heartburn or indigestion, unexplained tiredness, even nausea and vomiting or odd tightness in your throat and think it may be a silent heart attack, call 911. Getting treated quickly saves as much heart muscle as possible. But folks who have silent heart attacks often miss out on interventions, with deadly consequences.

If you’re wondering about weird symptoms in your past or if you have on-going tiredness, shortness of breath and/or chest twinges, talk to your doctor. A silent heart attack can cause valves in your heart to leak or leave scars that make the heart work less efficiently. Your doctor may order an ECG, a cardiac ultrasound or other tests. If needed, you’ll get a treatment plan that includes lifestyle changes (nutrition upgrade and more physical activity) as well as possible medication (a statin and/or daily 162mg of aspirin with a warm glass of water before and after) to protect your heart from further damage and make yourself strong again.
