AMRI Hospital Kolkata enumerates the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The immune system is central to human health and well-being. It is the body's first line of defence that provides protection against diseases. Thus, a healthy immune system is imperative for attaining optimal health. The healthier your immune system is, the better your body can cope with the toxic elements it encounters. However, there are a number of disorders that hinder the proper functioning of the immune system. According to the experienced medics at AMRI Hospitals, one of the leading multispecialty hospital chain, Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common types of autoimmune arthritis which occurs due to a faulty immune system.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease which is mainly caused when the immune system targets the joint linings. Various studies have highlighted that women are more susceptible to this disease. It poses a huge threat to various body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels.
The inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis is potent enough to damage other parts of the body as well. It has been observed that Rheumatoid arthritis is difficult to be diagnosed at times. Though the new types of medications have brought a significant progress in the treatment, but severe rheumatoid arthritis can still lead to physical disabilities.
AMRI Hospital Kolkata emphasises that undergoing proper tests and treatment is important for an early diagnosis of Rheumatoid arthritis. As a matter of fact, the people who undergo a timely treatment are more likely to lead an active life. The risk of suffering from the type of joint damage that leads to joint replacement is also alleviated by it. The treatment is effective in improving the overall health and reducing the pressure on joints to a great extent. However, it is important to note that Lab tests and X-rays don’t show accurate results in diagnosing Rheumatoid arthritis. It is recommended to seek help from a rheumatologist for designing the best-suited treatment plan.
In the early stages, people suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis are likely to experience tenderness and pain in the joints. The disease is mainly characterised by the following symptoms:

  • Swelling or stiffness in the joints for six weeks or longer.
  • Having injuries (such as a sprained ankle) which take long to heal.
  • Experiencing numbness or tingling in the wrist and hands (carpal tunnel syndrome).
  • Pain in the forefoot and heel due to plantar fasciitis (a common foot disorder which leads to swelling of the tissue at the bottom of the foot, near the heel).
  • Dryness in the eyes, mouth, nose, throat, or skin due to inflammation.
  • Achiness in the joints due to overexertion or osteoarthritis which usually lasts longer than a week. It can also be symmetrical, which can cause pain in hands, feet, knees, or ankles simultaneously.
  •   Morning stiffness for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Having locked joints, especially in the knees and elbows.

Undergoing a timely treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is effective in controlling pain, swelling and alleviating the joint damage. Thus, it is recommended to keep in mind the aforementioned symptoms and ensure timely treatment in order to combat the same.
