Spinal discs play a major role in providing shock absorption for the spine. They act as the shielding and shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. Thus, it becomes important to ensure their proper functioning and condition. However, there are various spine-related disorders such as Slipped (Herniated) Disc which can be quite distressing and painful.
A number of studies have highlighted that the problem of slipped (herniated) disc usually occurs when the disc or its part is forced through a weakened part of the disc. The health and fitness experts at AMRI Hospitals, one of the leading multispecialty hospitals in Kolkata highlight that, it majorly results in pressure being placed on the nearby nerves or the spinal cord. It can occur in any part of the spine and is more common in adults than children. It tends to develop suddenly or may even take a few weeks or months at times. For anyone diagnosed with a slipped disc, it is imperative to undergo an accurate clinical diagnosis to determine if the phase is herniated disc, degenerative disc disease or another condition.
AMRI Hospital Kolkata states that the term slipped disc can also refer to degenerative disc disease. A person suffering from degenerative disc disease is likely to experience pain due to inflammation, abnormal micromotion instability, lower back spasms, or any combination of these three. He is likely to experience numbness or tingling in the body part served by the affected nerves. In case of the herniated disk being in the lower back, he will feel the most intense pain in the buttocks, thigh and calf.
The condition of Herniated discs is more common in lower back especially at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels (lumbar disc herniation). The part of the spine which is affected determines the area in which you experience pain. AMRI Hospital Group highlights that it can be caused due to a number of factors, such as:
• Disk degeneration (gradual, aging-related wear and tear)
• A traumatic event such as a fall or a blow to the back.
• A Combination of Degeneration and Injury.
• Loss of elasticity and flexibility of the discs which make it protrude.
• Poor posture.
• Several genes are also associated with intervertebral disc degeneration.
• Regular use of incorrect body mechanics.
• Hard physical labor or physical activity.
• Improper lifting especially if done by twisting or turning.
• Excessive strain.
• Smoking.
• Being overweight.
• Sports involving weight bearing such as weightlifting.
• Impulsive and vigorous trauma or injury to your back like a car accident.
• Activities that involve a lot of sitting, for example- driving.
• Repetitive lifting, pulling, pushing, bending sideways and twisting.
As a matter of fact, the symptoms brought on by a slipped disk are usually noticed after a few weeks. It is recommended to undergo a complete surgical procedure if the symptoms are observed or they get worse. You can reduce your risk of developing a slipped disk by keeping a check on its symptoms and ensuring appropriate remedial measures.
