After you have been referred for heart surgery, a surgery scheduler will contact you:- To schedule an appointment
- To meet with a cardiothoracic surgeon
- To discuss the type of surgery, risks, benefits, and the overall surgical process.
Pre-operative work up
After the surgery date is set, you will need to complete a pre-operative work up which may happen at your initial surgical consult, or on a separate day before surgery.You will receive a package with instructions on the location and time for the pre-operative work-up if you did not get this done at your initial consult visit. If you are 75 years old or older, you may also receive information on skilled nursing facilities to help you plan in the anticipation of your discharge needs.
We will also discuss any other medications that you are taking, and if you should stop or continue them before surgery.
Blood thinners
If you take blood thinners, you will receive instructions for when to stop taking the blood thinners. Our general guideline for when to stop blood thinners before surgery will vary on the specific type of blood thinner.
