Medical Equipments available at AMRI Hospitals for Healthcare Facilities

The healthcare industry has witnessed a global revolution with the advancement of technology, especially in the last couple of decades. Today, India has one of the largest markets for medical devices in Asia, and is poised for a rapid growth.
Access to quality medical devices is important to control the non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, pulmonary problems and cancer. In the recent years, the Central government has tried to carve out distinct regulations for medical devices. On the other hand, the Health Ministry has also worked out a framework to provide quality treatment to the patients across the country.
Many private healthcare providers are also installing latest medical equipment, ensuring uninterrupted treatment with best healthcare facilities. Recently, AMRI Hospital Kolkata introduced new imaging equipment and navigation system for accurate spine and neurosurgery. The introduction of O-arm S8 navigation system, the most advanced 3D surgical imaging equipment, will make the surgeries a lot more efficient.
Similarly, many advanced tools like conventional electrocardiogram (ECGs), bedside monitors, diagnostic X-ray equipment, therapy equipment, such as diathermy-ultrasound-electrotherapy, surgical diathermy, respiration monitors, etc., have been incorporated by various private hospitals to provide universal healthcare to the citizens.
On the other hand, government hospitals have also brought new technologies like ICDs (implantable cardiac defibrillators) that are capable of reducing the mortality by 20-30 per cent over 10 years for the patients. The prognosis for countless women with breast cancer hasimproved with the introduction of technologies like mammography and radiation. Apart from this, medical equipment like MRI, medical monitors and ultrasound have also proved to be helpful in examining the medical state of the patient.

“Healthcare professionals can only perform their duty to the full potential if the medical equipment are functioning in the right way”, reckon medical practitioners at AMRI Hospitals, best hospital in Kolkata. They can only measure the medical condition of the patients precisely with a better technology. So, all the medical equipment need to be maintained properly, especially with the rise in the number of life-threatening diseases.
Although India has struggled to provide revolutionary healthcare to an entire population of 1.4 billion people, the expansion of private healthcare industry has played a huge role in making healthcare available to the remotest of areas. It has helped in bridging the gap between the demand and supply of medical technologies in the recent times.Continuous innovations in the private sector have expanded the healthcare facilities to the remotest areas of the country. Apart from this, the Make in India initiative has ensured the production of affordable devices that can compete at the global level.
However, there is still a need to revolutionize the healthcare industry further to ensure the availability of affordable treatment and medical equipment to all the parts of the country.

Quality Initiatives Are Making Healthcare Affordable In West Bengal

Making quality healthcare affordable and available is very important. The West Bengal government has launched several initiatives in the last few years to transform the healthcare landscape in India.
Likewise, the government of West Bengal has ushered in a revolution in the healthcare sector of the state. It is the only state in the country to have a Chief Minister handling the portfolio of its health department. “A number of initiatives have been taken in the state, which have been well supported and aided by all the leading hospitals,” says a medical practitioner at AMRI Hospital in Kolkata.
The new government has made every kind of treatment free in government hospitals. It has set up 107 fair price medicine shops in the state. The government is also providing the land, electricity and water to the hospital premises.
Aiding the initiative, the private sector is also providing medical facilities at reasonable rates. Apart from this, 33 CCUs and 17 HDUs have also been built by the government in the last 4 years.
The initiatives taken by the central government including the Mission Indradhanush, E-health, Ayushman Bharat, National Organ Transplant Program, Drug Regulation, Tobacco Control Program and many more, have benefited all the states. Five regional organ and tissue transplant organizations have been established in West Bengal; the organ donation rate has increased in the state since 2012.
World famous hospitals like AMRI Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital, Desun Hospital, Medica Super speciality Hospital, and many more are emerging as a hotspot for medical tourism in West Bengal. The credit also goes to the government initiatives that have paved the way for upgradation of the existing hospitals, while giving green signal to the new establishments.
With advanced technology at their disposal, these hospitals are providing a vast range of health services. Some of the important specialities offered by these hospitals include cardiology and cardiac surgery, dermatology, dentistry, radiology, obstetrics, oncology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, neurology, etc. They are equipped with state of the art Cath labs, LINAC for radiotherapy, OT’s with HEPA, MRI and CT scan machines. These hospitals treat a number of patients every day, providing un-interrupted healthcare services to the locals, as well as foreign nationals.
There is hardly any doubt about the credibility of healthcare industry in West Bengal. Both government and local healthcare centres have witnessed a massive change. “We have witnessed a major change with new reforms and initiatives, as most of the hospitals are capable of treating a number of patients with various diseases under one premises,” says a general practitioner at AMRI Hospitals. The central government and the state government of West Bengal are looking to launch a number of new initiatives in the future that can further boost the industry.

Orthopaedists at AMRI Hospitals, one of the best hospitals in Kolkata, explain that the surgery is mainly performed in case of injuries or damages to joints due to other conditions.Surgery can also treat issues related to the nervous system, like the ones that arise from injury to the spine. These issues can be in the form of birth defects or as the result of aging. They can be severe and chronic, too.
What happens during an Orthopaedic surgery?
  • Diagnosis of the injury
  • Treatment using medication, exercise, casting, surgery or other options
  • Recovery process, which includes exercises or physical therapy to restore movement, strength and function. It can require a long period of time
  • Precautions to prevent injuries and stop the disease’s progression
Conventional orthopaedic surgeries were based on the use of braces to treat skeletal deformities in children and straighten their bones. Surgeons inserted foreign material in the form of screws, wires, pins, tongs, and prosthetics, into the body to place the damaged bone in perfect alignment or to replace the bone and even the connective tissue.

Lower abdominal pain in women can indicate severe health conditions

Lower abdominal pain (also known as pelvic pain) is a common medical condition, especially in women. It can indicate some transient disorders or serious disease in a few cases, warn gynaecologists at AMRI Hospital, one of the best hospital in Kolkata. The reasons for this pain, however, can be different for different people. Some of the most common reasons for lower abdominal pain in women include:
Diverticulitis
Pain in the lower left side of the abdomenis a result of inflammation in the small pouches, called diverticula, which can form in the lining of your digestive system. Fever, weakness, nausea, constipation, cramping, bloating, rectal bleeding (in a few cases) and vomiting are some of the most common symptoms of diverticulitis. The condition can also require a surgery, depending upon its severity.
Indigestion
Health experts at AMRI Hospitals explain that indigestion is mainly due to the stomach producing more acid in response to the food. This acid can cause irritation in your oesophagus, stomach, or bowel. Common symptoms of indigestion include bloating, belching and gas, nausea and vomiting, having acidic taste in mouth, growling stomach and burning sensation in your stomach or upper belly.
Hernia
A condition occurs when an organ, usually one of the intestines, pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. Though hernias are most common in the abdomen, they can also occur in the upper thigh, belly button, and groin areas. The condition can range from severe to mild.
Gallstones
Stones in the gallbladder are yet another common cause of pain in the lower abdomen. It occurs when snallstones block your gallbladder duct. Along with stomach ache, nausea, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, indigestion, and diarrhoea are some of its common symptoms. Health experts at AMRI Hospital warn that gallstones are also associated with various other health conditions like jaundice, cholangitis, gangrene of the gallbladder, sepsis, pancreatitis, fistula, and ileus.
Menstrual cramps
These are the periodic abdominal and pelvic pains experienced by women during menstruation. The pain can range from severe toa minor annoyance. As a matter of fact, pain is severe in at least one in every seven women. It can also hinder your day-to-day activities. Gynaecologists at AMRI Hospitals recommend physical exercise for alleviating menstrual cramps.
Ovarian cyst
Ovarian cysts are small sacs filled with fluid that develop in a woman’s ovaries. Although majority of cysts do not cause any major symptoms, they can lead to serious complications. Larger cysts can press on the bladder, leading to increase in urination. Rupturing of a cyst can also cause severe pain and internal bleeding. Thus, it is advised to seek immediate medical attention in case you experience any symptom of ovarian cyst.

Wrinkles and hair loss reversed in mice

The dream of being able to preserve our physiological youth has haunted humanity for centuries, and the more science advances, the more we gain hope that this dream will some day become reality  Are scientists getting closer to finding the secret of rejuvenation?
Hair loss and the development of skin wrinkles are something we all begin to experience, to greater or lesser degree, as we grow older.

These symptoms of aging are largely dictated by decline of mitochondrial function within cells.
Mitochondria are key cellular structures that produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the “fuel” that maintains healthy cellular function.

When mitochondria can no longer function properly or produce the required amount of ATP, this can have harmful consequences.
Other than leading to the wrinkling of skin and hair loss, mitochondrial dysfunction can contribute to the development of many chronic diseases.

In a recent study, Keshav Singh — from the University of Alabama at Birmingham — and colleagues have been experimenting with ways of reversing a DNA mutation that leads to mitochondrial dysfunctions.

Neuroscience Centre of AMRI Hospital Probes How the Brain Makes Decisions

Neuroscience Centre at AMRI Hospital probes how the brain makes decisions. Brain has an incredible power to store more information than a supercomputer and to create a network that outweighs any social portal. The brain has helped human beings to achieve great milestones such as walking on the moon, studying the human genes, and creating masterpieces of music, art and literature.
Moreover, scientists are yet to discover the full potential of things that the brain can do. This organ solely controls different aspect of the body—rate of heart beat, appetite, emotions and, most importantly the memory.
The brain also determines the response of immune system to a disease and partially controls how humans respond to medical treatments. It frames our mindset, beliefs, dreams, and emotions. It is the brain that performs all these functions which make us human.
Neuroscientists deal with the diagnosis and treatment of nervous system disorders in the body.  Their expertise is to decode the brain’s command of all its diverse functions. In all respects, neuroscience has made massive progress. Scientists are working towards gaining a deeper understanding of how the brain’s 100 billion nerve cells are born and their growth pattern. They further research on how these cells categorize themselves into effective, functional circuits that typically remain in working order for life.
Brain researchers of Institute Of Neurosciences at AMRI Hospital continually strive for a better understanding of this behavior. How do cell circuits allow us to read, speak and respond? How and why do we build connections? How do we think, memorize, or motivate? Scientists at AMRI Hospital are exploring possible causes of distressing disorders of the brain and body, as well as measures to avert or cure them.
AMRI Institute of Neurosciences is well-appointed with the latest equipment and expertise of highly qualified professionals. With round the clock service, the institute lays a special focus on Neuro Emergency and Trauma Care. It offers neuro care for neuro diagnostics, advanced neuro surgery, neuro rehab and stroke management, all under one roof.

Top 5 full body exercises that will help you get in shape quickly

The number of exercises that can be incorporated into a person’s routine are endless. The list is long enough and it might be confusing for anyone to understand which ones will actually make a difference.
A full body workout targets multiple muscles in the body. The exercises that you choose should be easy to learn. Also, avoiding fancy equipment is a good idea. The intensity and technique of the workout makes a difference, say experts at AMRI Hospital, one of the well-renowned hospitals in Kolkata.
Following are the top 5 exercises that will help you achieve a healthier and fitter body.
Turkish Get-up
Lie down on the floor or a mat on one side of your body. Take a dumbbell in the other hand and keep it out at arm’s length. Now, all you need to do is stand from this position. Make sure that the dumbbell remains at arm’s length, giving you the help of only two legs and one arm to stand up and lift the dumbbell.
Doing 3 – 4 sets of 5 – 10 Turkish Get-ups daily is enough to give your body the perfect makeover.
Swing Squats
This exercise explosively yields the maximum results. Hold a dumbbell/kettlebell in your hand, down by the feet with one arm outstretched. Get into the squat position, push your butt behind and plant your toes firmly with a straight back. Swing the dumbbell, come halfway up, and quickly change the direction and move to full squat position again. Following this, stand powerfully while swinging the dumbbell overhead.
The Chop
Open your feet wider than your shoulder-width, stand sideways, and hold a weighted ball at forehead level. Slightly bend your knees, bend your arms at 90-degrees. Tighten your abs, rotate the body and take the ball to the right side such that both your knees are bent and shin is parallel to the floor. Coming back, tighten your abs again, stand up, and come to the initial position. Repeat 15 times from right to left and vice versa each.
Butt-ups
Get into the plank position, make sure your forearms are firmly placed, and your tailbone is at the right height, and the core is experiencing the maximum strain. Do the downward dog with your butt in the air, flat back and chest towards the floor. Three sets up to 15 repetitions while engaging your core is optimum to tone your body.
Burpees
One of the exercises that will help you do a full body workout, it needs complete focus and intensity.
This is the procedure:
From a standing position squat down, hands on the ground, kick your legs behind one by one, do a push up, kick your legs back up into squat position, stand and jump while swinging your arms overhead.
A series of 10 to 20 burpees can help you achieve your desired calorie burning goal, and give your day the momentum you need.
Sometimes, people state that depending upon their routines, demographics, preferences and more, the exercises done should be different. However, what you need to understand is that wherever you go and consult the doctors, be it hospitals in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, or any other place for that matter, these exercises will help you equally irrespective of your routines or demographics.

HEALTHCARE SCHEME AYUSHMAN BHARAT TO BE ROLLED OUT WITH STATE HEALTH PROGRAMS

India’s ambitious healthcare scheme Ayushman Bharat will be rolled out in alliance with state health plans. With the states not giving up their own brand of health programs, this decision to include it under the umbrella program was obvious.

Ayushman Bharat aims to provide an annual health cover of Rs 5 lakh to 10.74 crore families. According to Indu Bhushan, the CEO of Ayushman Bharat, 1,53,000 health and wellness centres will be set up across the country under the preventive health component.  The beneficiaries will be identified on the basis of deprivation and occupational criteria, as per the socio-economic and caste census 2011 data.

In order to roll out the scheme, a MoU has been signed with 15 states and everything has been built into the document. In West Bengal, the programme will be in alliance with Swasthya Sathi scheme, providing opportunity to leading private hospitals like AMRI Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital, Desun Hospital, etc, to build on the state’s major healthcare scheme in accordance with Ayushman Bharat.

Swathya Sathi was announced on February 17, 2016 and officially launched on December 30, 2016. The scheme provides basic health cover for secondary and tertiary care, up to Rs 1.5 lakh per annum. All the pre-existing diseases are covered in the scheme. It also comes with real-time uploading of e-health record of the beneficiaries on discharge. Besides, this the scheme has an online grievance monitoring mechanism and an android-based Swasthya Sathi mobile app for assistance to beneficiaries.

All the state health schemes will continue to run. The Centre will pay 60 per cent of the premium for beneficiaries where the existing list of beneficiaries is larger than the beneficiary list as per SECC data. In order to identify the beneficiaries and prevent frauds, the process of verification is important.

There are enough hospitals mapped for empanelment in West Bengal, which include popular hospitals like Apollo Hospital, AMRI Hospital, Desun Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital, etc. These Hospitals will have a software and hardware to verify the eligibility of a person.
Apart from this, the state health agency will be needed by the states to implement the scheme. The total expenditure will depend on the actual market-determined premium paid in the states or UT’s.

According to the experts of the industry, Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme can prove to be decisive in making the healthcare affordable and available to the unprivileged. Also, the decision to roll out the scheme with state health plans will only boost the ambitious program in the future.

AMRI Hospitals-Mukundapur launches comprehensive airway clinic

New Delhi : AMRI Hospitals, Mukundapur officially launched Eastern India’s first comprehensive Airway Clinic on July 10, 2018, where both children and adults, who are suffering from disorders affecting their air passage due to various reasons, will be treated.
The super specialty clinic registered its first success on June 18, 2018 after surgeons at AMRI Mukundapur effectively operated on a 28-day-old baby from Bagula, Nadia, who was born with obstruction in her air passage. The baby was suffering from laryngomalacia, a condition where the larynx is blocked. In the case of the baby from Nadia, her epiglottis was blocking the air passage.
Dr. Saumitra Ghosh, Consultant ENT Surgeon, AMRI-Mukundapur, who has advance training for conducting such surgeries in Switzerland, successfully performed laser surgery on the baby and she can now breathe normally. The condition is extremely rare and performing laser surgery on a child less than a month old is one of the very few conducted in India.
As Eastern India’s first Airway Clinic starts functioning at AMRI Hospitals, Mukundapur, children with airway obstruction from birth, or adults with similar problems, resulting from neck trauma due to accidents, tumors, accidental acid poisoning, or even from strokes, will benefit from the clinic.
“Patients at the Airway Clinic are diagnosed properly with our latest fibre optic laryngoscope, cameras and other advanced instruments by a team of experienced professionals. Patients are treated with state-of-the-art CO2 laser and micro debrider-assisted surgery,” explained Dr. Ghosh. Dr. Amitabha Roy Chowdhury, Consultant ENT Surgeon, AMRI-Mukundapur, pointed out that the Airway Clinic is an extension of the Laryngology unit at AMRI Mukundapur, which includes three clinics.
“The Clinic has three component – airway, swallow, and voice – addressing three crucial aspects of ENT treatment. The Comprehensive Airway Clinic will diagnose and investigate complex and critical conditions, congenital or otherwise, in a focused manner,” Dr. Roy Chowdhury said.
“The ability to breathe and swallow is the most important prerequisite to sustain life. Thanks to advances in medicine, chances of survival for newborns with life-threatening birth defects have increased.”
Dr. Ghosh pointed out that congenital defects of the airway or the food passage are often overlooked and conventional hospital set-ups, even in the private sector, are not equipped to handle such cases, particularly in newborns and children.

AMRI Hospital conducts eastern India’s first Trans Aortic Valve implantation surgery

AMRI Hospital, one of the top multi-specialty hospitals in Kolkata, successfully conducted the Trans Aortic Valve implantation surgery. It is the first time this surgery has been conducted in eastern India. This is certainly yet another benchmark of excellence established by the experienced medics at AMRI Hospital, Kolkata.
Two patients, aged 86 and 58 underwent the treatment.
“Trans Aortic Valve implantation surgery is the least invasive surgical procedure, which repairs the damaged valve by replacing it. However, the procedure does not involve removing of the old valve. Rather, it places a new valve into the aortic valve’s place. Once the new valve is expanded, the old valve leaflets are shoved by it. Further, the role of regulating the blood flow is taken over by the tissue in the replacement valve,” said Dr Hazra, the well-known cardiologist at AMRI Hospital, Kolkata, who carried out the surgery.
Talking about the severity of heart diseases, Dr Hazra said, “Heart disease is no laughing matter. In fact it is quite common today with excessive levels of stress involved in our daily lifestyle. The key to combat it is to raise awareness about the disease, along with regular monitoring in order to keep a check on the health issues that lead to it.”
He happens to be the only cardiologist experienced in implanting artificial heart in eastern India. Having expertise in Paediatic Heart holes by keyhole, Dr Hazra has also performed a number of heart attack angioplasty 24X7 by radial route at AMRI Dhakuria in Kolkata.
Number awards and accolades bestowed upon him orchestrate Dr Hazra’s overall excellence and professional expertise. He is also the first cardiologist to implant wireless pacemaker in eastern India. Apart from this, he is also the first cardiologist to carry out Aortic valve replacement without opening the chest. With a rich experience of 23 years, Dr Hazra has also set record by implanting fully MRI compatible wireless Defibrilator for the first time in India.
Explaining the purpose of Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, Dr Hazra said, “As a matter of fact, the pumping of blood from your heart to the rest of your body usually opens the aortic valve. Any problem in the opening and closing of the valve results in a condition called Aortic stenosis. It results in extra strain put on the heart and often leads to breathlessness, swelling in ankles, pain in the chest, dizziness, and sometimes, blackouts.”
“Both the patients who underwent the Trans Aortic Valve implantation surgery at AMRI Hospital, Kolkata were discharged in good health and are doing well,” he said.

General and Minimally Invasive Surgery

General surgeons perform procedures that focus primarily on the abdominal area.  A number of these procedures can now be performed through minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery, which uses small incisions that enable more rapid healing.
Minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery involves inflating the abdomen with gas to create space between internal organs and the abdomen wall.   Narrow tubes are inserted into small incisions, and instruments pass through the tubes to perform the surgery, which the surgeon sees in a magnified view on a video monitor.  The advantages of laparoscopic surgery are many: access to internal organs is less invasive and post-operative pain is reduced, as is the need for strong pain medications.  This means faster healing and a quicker return to normal activities.
Our General and Minimally Invasive surgeons specialize in procedures involving the intestines, stomach, colon, liver and pancreas.  They also perform procedures that include the repair of hernias, surgery for diverticulitis and reflux disease, as well as removal of the gallbladder/gallstones or the appendix.
We are also able to implant gastric stimulators, which send mild electrical impulses to the lower stomach, alleviating symptoms of nausea and vomiting in patients with severe gastroparesis.  Dr. Steven M. Yood, a member of our surgical team, is the only surgeon in Eastern Massachusetts who is able to implant gastric stimulators.
