World No Tobacco Day: How To Quit Tobacco For Good?

May 31 is observed as World No Tobacco Day. The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2019 is “tobacco and lung health”, focusing on the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health and overall well-being. For ages, people have been using tobacco in our country in different forms. Some use it for smoking – cigarette, beedi, chillum, hooka, cigars and chutta (a homemade cigar). While others use smokeless tobacco in the form of- pan, gutka, khaini, pan masala, mishri, mawa and toothpaste with tobacco.
Many families in India earn their livelihood by making tobacco products like beedis and are assisted by their children in its production. Most of these children end up getting addicted to tobacco use in some form or the other. Children who are not active users of tobacco also suffer by inhaling tobacco flakes while making beedis, which increases their risk of getting various cancers and lung diseases.
Quitting all tobacco related products is the first step one can take towards improving their overall health. Initially, it might be difficult for people who have been smoking for years. But with determination and self-discipline, this can be achieved. Also the support of family, friends and timely professional are a key to helping an individual quit tobacco suggested by AMRI Hospitals, best hospital in Kolkata.
These steps may serve as a guide to quit tobacco
For quitting tobacco, you need to START:
S – Set a date and quit completely; simply reducing tobacco consumption would make you just bounce back. List the reasons why you want to quit and keep it with you.
T – Tell family and close friends to garner strength and support.
A – Anticipate and plan for difficult times. Keep a record of when, how much and why you smoke or use tobacco.
R – Remove all tobacco products from your vicinity.
T – Talk to your doctor to seek professional help for counselling and nicotine cravings; do not self-medicate.
Lastly, be prepared for relapse. Four out of five times the quitting trial fails! Nonetheless, keep trying.
So, START now and lead a tobacco free life on this World No Tobacco Day.

Health Tips to keep in mind during Ramadan

The holy month of Ramadan is a crucial month for the Muslim community, both physically and spiritually with the belief of learning restraint through practice. During this period the community observes Roza i.e. fast, which involves its members abstaining from eating and drinking, right from sunrise until sunset.
Fasting during Ramadan is known to help in improving one’s health but doing it the right way is imperative. Moreover, it can pose as a challenge for people with dietary issues to practice it for the entire month. Therefore, eating healthy and ensuring the consumption of all nutrients during this period is essential.
Following are a few suggestions to keep in mind in order to observe a healthy and fit Ramadan fast as suggested by AMRI Hospitals consultants:
1. Don’t miss Sehri – Also popularly known as ‘Suhoor’, this is considered to be the most important meal of the day, similar to breakfast. Sehri is the pre-dawn meal that contributes to a large extent in storing up nutrients to replenish the body’s requirement until Iftar. Unfortunately, several people tend to avoid this meal by eating heavy dinner instead, as waking up early becomes a challenge. However, skipping Sehri can cause digestive discomfort and make your body sluggish throughout the day. Therefore, indulge in a nutritious meal that includes fibre-rich food (figs, bananas, dates, cereals), complex carbohydrates (grains, wheat, oats), and high-protein food (cheese, eggs, meat).
2. Keep your body hydrated– This is one of the most essential tips to keep in mind during the month of Ramadan. One needs to balance the consumption of liquids to compensate not drinking 8 glasses/ 2 litres of water. Dehydration can lead to constipation, splitting headaches, and lethargy, and therefore, hydrating yourself before the fast begins with two-three glasses of water is critical, as is sipping on water on breaking the fast, between Iftar and your bedtime. Unhealthy drinks that contain caffeine including coffee, tea, aerated beverages must be avoided. People who cannot function without coffee can have a cup post 1-2 hours of a healthy balanced Iftar. Consuming water-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and soups are highly recommended to meet the daily water intake.
3. Moderate your diet and keep a check on your meal intake– People tend to get carried away during the Iftar meal and indulge in a large portion of meals but it is advisable to eat in moderation whenever the fast is broken, and keeping a constant check on the meal-size. Overeating can be responsible for an increase in heart-related issues along with triggering Type-2 Diabetes. Therefore, consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables is advisable.
4. Abstain from heavy workouts and exercising– As the entire month demands long hours of fasting, our body tends to get dehydrated, and therefore, it is recommended to not go overboard with your exercise regime. Light workouts are okay following fasting hours as they aid in regulating body functions and keep it hydrated.
As important as it is to observe fast, one should not overlook the importance of staying healthy. These simple tips can help you keep a check on your health during the holy month of Ramadan so you can observe fast without compromising on your health.

Health Tips to maintain Menstrual hygiene effectively

Here are some tips every woman should follow to maintain menstrual hygiene:-
1. Keep your vaginal area clean: It is important to keep your vaginal area clean especially during periods when there is blood flow from the body. Use warm water and diluted soap to wash the area. You can also use recommended vaginal washes available in the market to keep yourself clean. If, however, they irritate your skin or vagina, discontinue the use and speak to a doctor. The vagina also has a self-cleaning mechanism, so these washes aren’t really necessary for most women.
2. Never use two pads simultaneously: No, two is not better than one. Some women who experience heavy flow, tend to use two sanitary pads at one go to control the flow and prevent staining of clothes. This, however, is a bad idea as it can cause infections in the vaginal region. Stick to one and keep changing it often if the flow is more, suggested by AMRI Hospitals, Best hospital in Bhubaneswar .
3. Wear comfortable, clean underwear: While changing your sanitary pad is essential, it is also important to wear something comfortable during these days. Tight thongs or underwear made of fabric that doesn’t allow your skin to breathe will also lead to infections. Stick to clean and comfortable cotton knickers that do not stick to your skin.
4. Change your pad every four hours: If you use sanitary pads to soak the flow during your periods, remember to change it often. Ideally, changing it every four hours is good. If not every day, do this on the first two days when the flow is heavier. On others too, don’t wear the same pad for more than eight hours.
5. Clean reusable pads properly: There are sanitary napkins that can be reused for several menstrual cycles. If you use one of these, ensure that you clean them thoroughly after every use so that there are no germs and there is no scope of infection. Follow the instructions given and don’t reuse them after the said number of uses.

5 things to keep in mind for your menstrual hygiene

Menstruation is one of the vital processes of a woman’s body which deserves utmost caution and self-care. Ensuring proper hygiene during menses, and eating right is the key to ease the pain you go through.
Promise yourself healthy and happy periods with these hygiene tips, suggested by gynaecologist of AMRI Hospitals, best gynaecology hospital in Kolkata.
1. Change your sanitary napkin every 4-6 hours
Changing sanitary napkins or tampons within every 4-6 hours is the cardinal rule to establish vaginal hygiene. Menstrual blood, when released from the body attracts various organisms from our bodies, which multiply in the warmth of the blood, and cause irritation, rashes or urinary tract infections. Changing your sanitary napkin or tampon regularly curbs the growth of these organisms and prevents infections.
2. Wash yourself properly
Washing your vagina regularly is extremely important, because the organisms cling to your body after you have removed your sanitary napkin. Most people wash themselves regularly, but not the right way–which is, using your hands in motion from the vagina to the anus, not vice-versa. Motioning your hand from the anus to the vagina can lead to the transmission of the bacteria from the anus into the vagina or urethra opening leading to infections.
3. Don’t use soaps or vagina hygiene products
While using vaginal hygiene products everyday is a good idea, using these products during menses can turn things around. Vaginas have their own cleaning mechanism which comes into play during menstrual cycles, and these artificial hygiene products can hamper the natural process leading to infections and growth of bacteria.
4. Discard the sanitary napkin properly-
Disposing off your tampons and sanitary napkins properly is an important step. Wrap them properly before you throw them away, so the bacteria and infections do not spread. Make sure you don’t flush them, since that will block the toilet causing the water to back up, spreading the bacteria all over it. Washing your hands properly is of utmost importance after you have wrapped and discarded the used tampons and sanitary napkins, since you’re likely to touch the stained area while wrapping them.
5. Stick to one method of sanitation-

Women tend to use tampons and sanitary napkins, or two sanitary napkins simultaneously during heavy flow which is an efficient technique. While it may keep you dry and prevent stained clothes, it can cause infections too. The combination of two techniques absorbs the blood making us oblivious to the need to change our tampons and sanitary napkins. Without frequent change, the accumulated blood invites bacteria and causes infections. So, it is advisable to use one sanitary napkin and change it as frequently as you can during heavy flow. These cardinal rules will help you stay healthy and manage your period better.

Summer Guide to Healthy Hair & Scalp For Your Baby

Just like we take care of babies during summer to keep their bodies cool and refreshed, it is important to pay attention to their scalp and hair to keep dry and flaky skin at bay, which is a common concern among newborns. A baby’s delicate skin is highly susceptible to these skin conditions along with sweating, especially during seasonal changes. This makes it imperative for parents to practice and incorporate a hair care routine to soothe their tender scalp and ensure healthy hair.
We all are aware that baby’s hair and scalp is sensitive, which makes it vulnerable to irritation. Moreover, during summer, the scalp is prone to sweating which leads to discomfort. But these conditions can be managed by ample care such as a gentle head massage with a baby oil and washing the scalp with warm water, suggested by AMRI Hospitals.
Here are two key points that will help you choose the right products for your baby’s hair and scalp:-
1. For an oil massage: While massaging baby’s body, concentrate on the scalp as this helps improve blood circulation. Flaky skin and cradle cap can be managed by gently massaging the scalp with an oil. An oil massage also helps promote sound sleep. It is advisable to use a baby oil which is free from mineral oil and lanolin and is enriched with Olive Oil and Winter Cherry. Vitamin E in Olive Oil helps soften the skin and Winter Cherry helps soothe the skin.
2. Use a shampoo to nourish the hair and scalp: You can opt for a shampoo or a head-to-heel baby wash to clean the hair and scalp. Use a shampoo that can nourish baby’s hair without causing any irritation or tears. A shampoo containing Chickpea, a natural source of protein, helps condition and moisturize the hair, and Hibiscus helps nourish the hair. For a baby wash, you can opt for one that is infused with Watermelon and Neem.
Caring for your baby’s skin and hair could be one of the best moments that you will cherish for days to come.

You must also take steps to prevent the disease, given by AMRI Hospitals consultants.

1. Avoid smoking: If you suffer from asthma or see mild symptoms of the disease in your body, it is recommended that you steer clear of habits like smoking. Smoking, both active or passive can act as a trigger and cause an asthma attack. You should avoid standing in a group of people who are smoking and refrain from the habit yourself.
2. Keep away from dust: Dust can irritate the lining of your nose and cause you to sneeze even when you are healthy, but if you have asthma or show any symptoms of the respiratory disorders, dust can be an even bigger enemy for you. You must keep away from dust in the streets by using a mask to cover your face and nose and even otherwise.

4. Exercise: Exercise can help you prevent, as well as manage asthma better. You must refrain from a lot of cardio exercises since it can increase your heart rate and cause breathlessness. However, including breathing exercises like the ones in Yoga, and practicing light and mild exercises, can help in relieving symptoms of asthma, and also prevent it if you do not have it already.
5. Eucalyptus oil home remedy: Eucalyptus oil is one of the most popular home remedies for treating asthma naturally. Weight loss Tips: AMRI Hospitals

Warm water helps in healing the body, improving digestion, metabolism and reducing metabolic waste that may have accumulated in our immune system. Consumption of warm water increases the tightening of the intestines, which improves the process of elimination of toxins and waste from the body. Cold water, on the other hand, is also stripped off of many minerals and can become a problem for the digestive system, especially during and after a meal. It is recommended that people who like to drink cold water do not consume it 20 minutes before and after eating, nor during the meal.
Warm water improves digestion and helps in washing out toxins from the body. Warm water helps to break down food faster and helps to improve digestion. Drinking cold water during or after a meal, can, in fact, make the oils in the food harder and create a fat deposit in the intestines.
Warm water can also help people who suffer from problems like gas and constipation. Bloating and decreased bowel movement is caused due to lack of water in the body. Drinking water, especially warm water can help in improving bowel movement and aid digestion, and help you get rid of problems like constipation. Good digestion is the key to healthy weight loss, and warm water helps in keeping the digestion healthy.
Metabolism plays a very important role in weight loss. Warm water increases body temperature, and thereby also increases metabolic rate. The increased metabolic rate helps burn calories, which is the basis of losing weight. Drinking warm water also improves other functions like that of the kidney and liver.
According to physicians of AMRI Hospitals, Best Hospital in Kolkata recommend drinking warm water with lemon or tea in the morning to decrease the free radical activity in the body, as a means to detox. However, drinking a glass of warm water at any time, especially after your meals can help in the break down of body fat, and also keep cravings away.
Drinking warm water also has other health benefits like alleviating pain, improving blood circulation and also prevent premature ageing.

Keep your body hydrated with 5 Remedies

The summer season can be really harsh on your body, depriving it of water and moisture. Hydration is extremely important for the body as it ensures good health, efficient body functions. Hydration is important to keep the body healthy overall, including special benefits for heart health and weight loss.
The body loses water naturally in the form of urination and excretion through the digestive system. During the summer season, the body sweats a lot, which causes even more loss of water. We, therefore, feel more thirsty during the summer than in the winter. It is important to keep your body hydrated during the summer. Dehydration can lead to problems like a heat stroke in the summer. The best way to hydrate your body is to drink a lot of water, but since it can get really boring since it is tasteless and odorless, here are 5 remedies, apart from water, to keep your body hydrated and stay healthy this summer season.
1. Milk: Milk has a lot of health benefits, especially for growing children as it promotes growth and strength in the body. However, milk can also help avoid dehydration, according to a 2011 study, especially in children. According to health-care consultants of AMRI Hospitals, best hospital in Kolkata milk is a better way of hydrating children than other energy drinks or even water itself. Milk works well for hydration in adults too, and a milk-based drink should definitely be included in your summer day.
2. Orange juice: Orange juice is, in fact, a very hydrating drink and therefore should be a part of everyone’s diet in the summer season. Orange juice, which may not be as effective as milk, contains natural sugar, which can help regain energy lost due to the excess heat.
3. Sweet drinks and crisps: Sweet drinks and crisps sound like a great movie night snack and are in fact very helpful in hydrating your body in the summer. When you sweat, you lose water, and salt from the body. You must include naturally sweet beverages like fruit juices to make up for the energy and water loss, and balance the salt loss with the help of crisps. Prefer baked crisps, made with healthy ingredients over packaged chips.
4. Lemon-ginger tea: Including tea in your diet in the summer season can have some re hydrating effects also. A lemon ginger tea adds salt and sugar to your body and creates a balance. We lose sugar, water and salt in the form of sweat and need to replace it to make sure our body is not dehydrated.
5. Eat your water: Another great way to make up for the lost water in the body, apart from drinking this and that, is to include foods rich in water in your diet. A salad made with water-rich vegetables like cucumbers, and fruits like watermelon, sun melon, etc. can be really hydrating.

The Evolution of Minimal Access Surgery and its Advantages

Around 15 years ago, most of the medical surgeries conducted by specialists were open or invasive in nature, which required a surgeon to make a large incision in the patient’s body.
However, minimally invasive surgical procedure has successfully taken over the traditional ones in the last decade. A range of abdominal surgical procedures are performed with minimally invasive techniques.
This advanced surgical process is helping surgeons to perform a number of cancer surgeries safely, quickly and efficiently. Instead of making a large incision, surgeons make a number of small incisions to conduct the surgical procedure. They use the laparoscopic camera and instrument to gain access to the operating area, which increases the chances of success.
According to the surgeons at AMRI Hospitals, the best hospital in Eastern India, there are many advantages of this latest surgical procedure. Some of the advantages include less blood loss, minimal pain, and discomfort, less wound complications, shorter hospital stay, etc.
With the help of minimal access cancer surgery, esophageal cancers can be operated without opening the chest, reducing lung-related complications like pneumonia and atelectasis significantly. While MACS has become a standard of care because of the advantages over conventional surgery, its use is still limited to very few high volume centers due to the high cost and steep learning curve.
The AMRI Cancer Institute at Dhakuria has taken up the challenge to offer MACS to patients at a reasonable cost. The appropriate use of minimally invasive surgery for cancer patients is important. This latest procedure does not impact the quality of life, which is why it is seen as the most effective technique for complex surgeries.
Surgeons performing minimally invasive procedures require the perfect hand-eye coordination and the ability to work in a small area with a limited view and without tactile clues. This is the main reason why it is important to choose the right healthcare provider with great expertise in the field of MACS for better results.

Most Common Neurological Disorders

Neurological disorders are incredibly difficult on both the person living with them and their loved ones. These types of conditions come in all different shapes and sizes and can affect people of all ages and health. From Alzheimer’s to Bell’s Palsy and epilepsy, there are almost too many neurological disorders to count these days. In order to have a better understanding of what a person living with a neurological disorder may be going through and what their treatment options are, it is of the utmost importance that we take the time to educate ourselves on what, exactly, neurological disorders are.
A couple of weeks ago we looked at some of the most surprising facts about neurological conditions, and today we are going to build off of that. In order to more fully grasp how any given neurological condition can impact an individual’s life, it is important to have a better understanding of the most common disorders that affect the brain.
There are hundreds – if not more – neurological conditions that we know about today. These disorders range in severity and the symptoms are often different from person to person. As we get older, it is not uncommon to become forgetful and find ourselves faced with conditions that affect the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and nerves). However, some of these conditions are more rare and serious than others. Keep in mind that, while some neurological disorders can cause more severe side effects than others, any condition that impacts your neurological system is bound to be problematic. Thankfully, there is a host of treatment options that can help those living with a neurological condition improve their overall quality of life and comfort level. One of the most common – and effective – types of therapy for neurological conditions is the Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) model, which is designed to re-educate the body to perform normal movement patterns.

With that in mind, here is a look at a few of the most common neurological disorders:
  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia – These conditions are some of the most common and affect the individual’s memory and ability to think. Alzheimer’s is most commonly associated with the aging process and there unfortunately is no cure. However, certain types of treatment are able to improve an individual’s quality of life.
  • Epilepsy – This is a type of neurological disorder that is characterized by abnormal electrical activity of the brain, which in turn results in seizures. It should be noted that there are many different types of seizures that a person suffering from epilepsy can experience.
  • Multiple Sclerosis – MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the insulating layer of many nerve cells in the body. When this layer is destroyed, the nerves are then impaired, which leads to disease.
  • Stroke – A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is diminished in some capacity. The blood works to carry oxygen and nutrients to the brain, so when the brain does not receive this supply due to a blood clot or some other obstacle, it can result in brain damage.
  • Parkinson’s Disease – This neurological condition is a motor system disorder that is characterized by a loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. A person with Parkinson’s may experience tremors in the hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face, which could also result in impaired balance and coordination.

International Nurses Day: 5 health Tips to Help Nurses be Physically, Emotionally, and Mentally Fit

International Nurses Day is celebrated on the 12th of May, every year, and celebrates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the foundation philosopher of modern nursing. The theme for 2019 International Nurses Day is “Nurses – A voice to Lead – Health for all.” Nurses play a very important role in healthcare, next to the doctors. While the doctors take care of our physical health, nurses monitor patients and give them emotional and mental support to get through the illness.
Nurses all across the world, are, however, over-burdened with work. Apart from their profession, they have personal lives and roles of a daughter, mother or wife, to play. It can be really exhausting for a nurse to keep pace with her professional and personal life. When we talk about “health for all” as a theme for International Women’s Day, how can we leave behind the nurses of the world? The government, hospitals and management should make sure that the nurses of the world are healthy so that they can do a better job at their work, and ensure health for all, suggested by AMRI Hospitals, Best Hospital in Eastern India
1. Support groups: For nurses suffering from mental health issues, or any physical issues, hospitals can help by making support groups where they can talk, vent, and find solutions to their problems among people of their profession and lifestyle. Nurses are also people who could be going through a lot and may need support.
2. Vacations with their families: Nurses, especially women, can feel very over-worked and not find time with their families. It is important for their emotional and mental health to get some time off work, and get some time with the family. Organizations can come up with a periodic vacation for nurses, with their families, where they can unwind and reconnect with your families. It is very important for nurses to be able to work better and be healthy.
3. Health camps: Nurses should also participate in health camps organised by hospitals. They should get themselves tested regularly for any health issues and should get proper medical care in case of any health problems. Prevention of serious health risks like cancer, diabetes, etc. should be promoted for nurses.
4. Work in shifts: The most important bit of a nurse’s job is to be active all the time, to ensure proper monitoring of the patient and to keep everything in check. It is important for the top management to make nurses work in shifts, so they have enough time to rest, sleep, and find time for their family. Over-burden, over-time at work, or over-exhaustion can make them weak, lead to diseases, and hamper their health. Stress and sleep deprivation can also cause mental health issues.
