Can Diabetics Eat Processed Foods? Tips To Make Healthier Food Choices For Better Blood Sugar Control

Making healthier food choices can help you keep blood sugar levels stable, control body weight and manage diabetes symptoms. Processed food, as we all know, has been linked to an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure among others. The fact is that a large number of foods, from milk in your breakfast to microwave meals, these days is processed.
Many processed foods are high in fat (including unhealthy trans fats), sodium, sugar and calories, but tend to be low in nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They also contain high amounts of artificial colors and flavors, and preservatives. Recently, a study published in the journal Science Transnational Medicine found that proportionate, a common food additive in bread and other baked goods, may disrupt metabolism and drive insulin resistance in mice and men, fueling weight gain and diabetes.
Why are processed foods especially bad for diabetics?
Processed foods can be particularly unhealthy for people with diabetes because they can have a negative effect on blood sugar control. A stated above, research has shown that certain chemicals in processed foods can contribute to the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels. Eating a diet high in heavily processed foods has been associated with various health problems, including heart disease and cancer.
Tips to make healthier food choices
It may be noted that not all processed foods are created equal, meaning they can range from minimally processed to heavily processed. For instance, some minimally processed food items like pre-cut fruits and vegetables, salad mixes, hard-boiled eggs, milk and juices are quality convenience foods that can be part of a healthy diet for busy people.
As a general rule, you should make a habit of avoiding foods containing high amounts of difficult to recognize ingredients. Contrary to their supposed aim, many processed foods may contain a relatively high number of added salt and sugars. Hot dogs, ready meals, fast foods, white bread, white pasta, cakes, pastries, biscuits, buns, margarine, etc, are some of the food items typically recommended to avoid.
Try to avoid or minimize your intake of processed foods by focusing more on a whole-food diet prepared and cooked at home. By adding plenty of whole foods, including fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and beans, to your diet you’ll meet your nutritional needs while also improving your blood sugar control. It will also help you lose or maintain weight.
If you have diabetes and need help selecting more nutritious, less processed foods for a healthier diet, we suggest you consult with your doctor or a dietitian who can assist with meal planning as per your dietary preferences and health goals.

How To Make The Boring Water Interesting To Stay Hydrated This Summer?

The summer season is already hitting its peak this April and with the months of May and June approaching, it is only going to get hotter, especially in North India. The summer season requires you to take a little more care of yourself as the heat can harm your body externally and internally. Keeping your skin safe from the sun and staying hydrated are the key measures to beat the heat.
Hydration is extremely important as it aids weight loss, keeps all body functions running normally, and makes the skin and hair also healthier. Hydration is extremely important, especially during the summer to keep the body cool and to make up for the fluid loss due to sweat, which is excessive in the summers. The best way to stay hydrated is to drink water, but the fact that it is odourless and tasteless can make it really boring and you might want to treat your taste buds which you treat your body. Here are 5 ways you can make the water tasty to beat the heat, and treat your taste buds, at the same time.

The lemon mint virgin mojito

The most refreshing drink that you can try this summer season is the lemon and mint water-based drink. Just squeeze one lemon per glass of the drink that you want to make, crush some mint leaves and add it to the drink. Pour water and add sugar or sugar free drops for sweetener. This is an extremely healthy way to keep yourself hydrated, keep your weight and diabetes under control.

Fruit juices

If blood sugar or diabetes is not an issue, you can indulge in a glass of fresh juice or concentrated juice diluted with water to keep yourself hydrated. However, you should make sure you limit your intake as they are high in sugar and can lead to weight gain.

Detox water

Another way to make your water interesting is to add pieces of fruits in it to infuse the nutrients of the fruit into the water. Lemon, watermelon, mint leaves, and other summer fruits can be added to water and the water can help you detox and lose weight.

Tea

Green tea and other forms of tea are great for weight loss and detox and can also help you stay hydrated. If you are sitting in the office and looking for something warm to sip on, tea may be a good option for you. Tea contains antioxidants and has a lot of health benefits.

AMRI Hospitals Bhubaneswar launches social media campaign to spread awareness this ‘World Malaria Day’

In a bid to spread awareness about Malaria, AMRI Hospitals Bhubaneswar has launched a social media campaign ahead of the World Malaria Day. The hospital aims at uniting everyone for the fight against Malaria to save precious lives that are lost due to this disease.
World Malaria Day is celebrated every year on 25th April to educate the people about Malaria and help prevent the fatal disease from spreading. The WHO (World Health Organization) has also called for a major emphasis on the efforts to fight against Malaria.
Malaria is caused by Malaria Plasmodium Parasites, which can spread to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito called ‘malaria vectors’.  When this mosquito bites, a parasite is released into the bloodstream. The symptoms of malaria, such as fever, headache and chilling effect appear in 10-15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. The best way to prevent this disease is to use insecticide-treated mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying.
In 2017, nearly half of the world’s population was at risk, as 87 countries had ongoing malaria transmission. As per the World Malaria Report of November 2018, there were 219 million cases of malaria in 2017, as compared to 217 million cases in 2016. The estimated number of deaths due to malaria reported in 2017 were 43,000, a number similar to the previous year.
With increasing cases of Malaria, it is important for the healthcare providers to ensure quality treatment for the people. Likewise, it is equally important for the public to have appropriate knowledge of the disease to prevent Malaria from spreading.
The awareness campaign launched by AMRI Hospitals Bhubaneswar will aim at spreading awareness by reaching out to as many people as possible. Health experts believe that the knowledge of preventive measures can play a major role in reducing the number of cases and save precious lives from the wrath of Malaria.

Stomach Heat: Here’s How You Can Keep Your Stomach Cool Naturally.

An upset stomach, inflammation and irritation; we have all been there. This problem of excessive stomach heat occurs due to spicy foods, binge-drinking, late night meals. Basically, stomach heat is a condition where excessive heat is produced as a result of a faster digestive process. Stomach heat should be brought under control. Let us look at what exactly is stomach heat and what causes this common condition and some foods to cure it naturally.
The heat produced by stomach while digesting difficult foods can be a problem. There is no typical cause of a raised stomach temperature however, there are some common causes of stomach heat related to the digestive system, some of them which may include-
1. Spicy foods
2. Overeating
3. Late night meals
4. Excessive alcohol
5. Taking too many painkillers
Stomach heat can be treated with certain foods that help cool the temperature and reduce excessive acid levels. Home remedies are extremely effective in this case; however, medical treatment may be needed if the condition still persists.
Here are some foods that can help reduce stomach heat and in turn can give your stomach some relief.

1. Yogurt
While most dairy products can be difficult to digest, plain yogurt can have quite the opposite reactions. The active cultures in yogurt help increase the number of good bacteria in your gut further helping release the heat and aiding in digestion and other mechanisms. Alternatively, you can drink buttermilk every day to get some relief.
2. Cold milk
Cold milk helps cool down the temperature in the stomach and also reduces the level of acid present. Its soothing properties help settle down the uneasiness caused by the heat in the stomach. A glass of raw or cold milk every day may help relieve you from a heated tummy.
3. Boiled rice
A heated stomach may not have many symptoms apart from the uneasiness. What comes as a rescue option is boiled white rice that cools the stomach and increases water content. Do not add any spice or herb in the rice eat it just bland. In fact, you can also pair it up with plain yogurt.
4. Cooling herbs
Cooling herbs like peppermint and chamomile help reduce the heat in the stomach thanks to their cooling properties. A cup of peppermint and chamomile tea will ensure your stomach is relieved of excessive acid levels in the stomach.
5. Water-rich foods
Grab non-citrus foods like apple, peach, watermelon, cucumber, and avoid citrus foods that may only increase acids in the stomach raising temperature levels. Including water rich foods will help cool down the heat and ensure proper digestive system.
6. Lots of water
Drink lots of water to immediately soothe the heat in the stomach caused by various eating and drinking habits. Water will help flush out the toxins produced by excessive heat and ensure a healthy digestive system.
7. Coconut water
Coconut water helps neutralize the acid levels in the stomach; thanks to its alkaline nature. It also helps cool the lining of the stomach, reducing the heat produced.

10 Tips to Stay Fit and Healthy in Summer

  1. Eat five times per day. Okay this doesn’t mean chow down five full meals in one day. Space out your recommended calories with three normal meals and two snacks. For instance, have breakfast (within one hour of waking or after a morning workout), lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and one more evening snack. This will speed up your metabolism and prevent your body from going into starvation mode, which causes the body to store fat for future energy.
  2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water, and only water, every day. Cut out all those sugary soft drinks and juices and load up on water. Not only will you save money, cut a large amount of unnecessary sugar from your diet and facilitate fat metabolism, you will end up eating less because water fills you up. So before you devour your long-awaited lunch, chug a full glass of water.
  3. Interval train to save time and burn more fat. Don’t spend hours at the gym to get in shape, switch to interval training for better results and less time on your cardio machine. According to the doctors at AMRI Hospitlas, more calories are burned in short, high intensity exercises. Studies have shown that interval training can help “increase your metabolism, burn calories from fat and carbohydrates, and keep burning calories long after you finish exercising.” For instance, if you like to run for your cardio workout, try alternating jogging and sprinting in two-minute increments. You’ll be surprised at how fast the time goes by compared to your old, long and slow endurance routine.
  4. Exercise as soon as you wake up.Before you raid the refrigerator for breakfast, try squeezing in a morning workout. This is the optimal time to burn fat instead of carbohydrates because your body has been fasting throughout the night, creating a depletion of glycogen (stored carbohydrate) and lower blood sugar. Plus, if you exercise in the morning, you not only burn fat during your workout but at an accelerated rate for hours after.
  5. Choose wheat instead of white. It’s no secret that whole grain/wheat is healthier than white bread. But how can this help you lose weight?Whole grain and whole wheat carbs contain much more fiber than white carbs. This magical ingredient suppresses your appetite, increases your rate of digestion and improves intestinal health.
  6. Stretch every day. How do you think dancers and avid yoga practitioners stay so slim? Stretching helps elongate our muscles so us females don’t “bulk up.” If you exercise, be sure to stretch for at least half the time of your workout.
  7. It takes fat to burn fat. Sounds like an oxymoron, but actually “good fats”(monounsaturated fats), which are found in olive oil, avocados, nuts and omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, help control your insulin levels, slow down carbohydrates rate of entry into the blood stream and sends a signal to your brain to stop eating, according to doctors at AMRI Hospitals.”.
  8. Eat Breakfast! A common misconception is to skip breakfast to cut daily calories. But actually, studies show that those who eat breakfast actually weigh less than those who skip. According to Meal Matter nutrition, “when you skip breakfast, your metabolic rate slows down and your blood sugar drops. As a result, you become hungry and have less energy. This sets you up to impulsively snack in the morning – often on high-fat sweets – or to eat extra servings or bigger portions at lunch or dinner. When you eat breakfast, your body feels nourished and satisfied, making you less likely to overeat the rest of the day.”
  9. Eat these sweets, consume less sugar. With an all-new and creative caffeinated drink coming out each season, coffee has become more of a liquid dessert than an energy booster. If you’re not a fan of plain coffee or green tea, choose Starbucks’ Skinny Latte, which contains only 90 calories, zero grams of fat and uses sugar-free syrup. For your cookie cravings, try South Beach Diet’s cookies and meal bars. These are not only delicious, but have little to no grams of sugar and are low in calories.
  10. Take home leftovers when dining out. It’s hard to diet when there are so many delicious Valley eateries serving up mouth-watering, and practically euphoric dishes. Don’t feel bad, just be sure to take at least 1/3 of it home for later.

Brain Tumors in Children, Causes and Symptoms

Pediatric brain tumors are masses or growths of abnormal cells that occur in a child’s brain or the tissue and structures that are near it. Many different types of pediatric brain tumors exist — some are noncancerous (benign) and some are cancerous (malignant).
Treatment and chance of recovery (prognosis) depend on the type of tumor, its location within the brain, whether it has spread, and your child’s age and general health. Because new treatments and technologies are continually being developed, several options may be available at different points in treatment.
Treatment for brain tumors in children is typically quite different from treatment for adult brain tumors, so it’s very important to enlist the expertise and experience of pediatric specialists in neurology and cancer.

What is a Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are unique among dental specialists in a number of ways. After completing four years of dental school, they go on to spend another four years in a hospital-based residency program for surgery. There, they are trained alongside other medical residents in the techniques of emergency medicine, general surgery and anesthesiology. In fact, they are the only health care specialists (aside from anesthesiologists) who can administer all levels of sedation, up to general anesthesia.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons at AMRI Hospitals focus on treating problems related to the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, and jaws (the upper jaw is referred to as the maxilla). While they sometimes work in a hospital, their practices are more often located in comfortable office settings. You may be referred to one of these specialists by your general dentist for a complex tooth extraction. Or, your orthodontist may send you for an examination if he or she suspects a problem with the alignment of your jaws.

It isn’t necessary to have an oral and maxillofacial surgeon perform every type of oral surgery; many dentists are expert at the more common procedures, such as simple extractions. However, for complex treatments that may require more invasive procedures or deeper levels of sedation, these specialists may be recommended. What kinds of procedures are they well-suited to perform? Let’s look at a few.

Procedures Performed by Oral Surgeons

Tooth extractions are possibly the most common procedure that oral surgeons perform. Patients are often referred to these specialists when wisdom teeth are impacted—that is, forming in a position where they can’t erupt or grow into the bite properly. Minor surgery is usually required to remove impacted wisdom teeth, and is generally recommended even if the impacted teeth aren’t (yet) producing any symptoms. Fortunately, this procedure is routine, and it is often done in the dental office using the techniques of sedation dentistry.

Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery is sometimes needed when orthodontics is not enough to correct a misaligned bite. In other cases, surgical treatment is necessary to repair congenital abnormalities (birth defects), or to treat severe orthodontic conditions, skeletal problems, and other disorders. In this procedure, usually performed under general anesthesia, the bones of the face and jaw may be reshaped and repositioned, and the jaws and teeth realigned. Oral surgeons often work closely with orthodontists in planning and carrying out this type of surgery, which may be needed when orthodontics alone can’t correct the problem.

Cleft lip /palate surgery is a special type of surgery often performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to correct the changes in facial structure caused by this birth defect.
Reconstructive surgery may be necessary after traumatic dental injury or facial trauma, which can result from an auto accident, a workplace injury, and many other causes. This surgery is also sometimes needed following the removal of a tumor or another operation. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in repairing and reconstructing facial structures, and are adept at working with both hard and soft tissues.

These specialists can also set a solid foundation for cosmetic and restorative dental work, including the placement of dental implants, the system of tooth replacement preferred by many patients. Depending on the condition of the jaw, bone grafting procedures may be required for proper placement of the implants in the jaw. When dentures are the chosen tooth replacement method, oral surgeons can smooth and reshape alveolar (jaw) bone as needed, to ensure a comfortable fit in the mouth.

In addition to these common procedures, oral and maxillofacial surgeons may be called on to consult with cases of obstructive sleep apnea, facial pain and infection, biopsies and removal of lesions, and diagnosis and treatment of some oral cancers. The extensive clinical experience these specialists bring to their patients can provide help when it’s needed most.

5 Daily Habits to Keep Your Brain Healthy

To maintain a healthy brain comes down to a number of life changes, but there are many daily habits people can get into that keep their brains healthy.

1. Change your diet
Dieting is a major trend in modern society, but most people diet to drop a few pounds. But those diets affect the brains in often negative ways. Changing the intake of certain carbohydrates and drinking more water can result in better brain health.
5-brain-foods
2. Exercise
When schedules get busy, one of the first things that gets ignored is exercise. The doctors of AMRI Hospitals, stresses the importance of exercise in reducing stress on the brain, increasing the flow of oxygen, blood, and nutrients to the brain and ultimately protecting it against harmful spikes in sugar levels.
3. Kill ANTs
The one of the most dangerous things to the brain are automatic negative thoughts, or ANTs. Negative thoughts happen to everyone, but letting them fester in the mind is a surefire way to harm your brain. AMRI Hospitals, best neurology hospital in Kolkata  experts offers a number of strategies for taking down these ANTs, most notably questioning the thought intensely to identify how it makes you feel and how you can overturn that feeling by changing the perspective on that thought.
4. Spend time with positive people
Removing negativity triggers chemical alterations to the brain that lead to more positive and energized thought. Taking stock of whom you spend time with and spending more time with positive people will keep your brain healthy and make you more productive and happy.
5. Learn something new every day
Einstein once said that if people spent 15 minutes a day learning something new, in a year they would be an expert and in five they’d be a national expert. The doctors of AMRI Hospitals, agrees and notes that learning new things breaks up routine and keeps the brain revitalized and stimulated.

10 ways to keep your brain young

Every brain changes with age, and mental function changes along with it. Mental decline is common, and it’s one of the most feared consequences of aging. But cognitive impairment is not inevitable. Here are 12 ways you can help maintain brain function.
1. Get mental stimulation
Through research with mice and humans, scientists have found that brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological “plasticity” and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.
Any mentally stimulating activity should help to build up your brain. Read, take courses, try “mental gymnastics,” such as word puzzles or math problems Experiment with things that require manual dexterity as well as mental effort, such as drawing, painting, and other crafts.
2. Get physical exercise
Research shows that using your muscles also helps your mind. Animals who exercise regularly increase the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain that is responsible for thought. Exercise also spurs the development of new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses). This results in brains that are more efficient, plastic, and adaptive, which translates into better performance in aging animals. Exercise also lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, helps blood sugar balance and reduces mental stress, all of which can help your brain as well as your heart.
3. Improve your diet
Good nutrition can help your mind as well as your body. For example, people that eat a Mediterranean style diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins are less likely to develop cognitive impairment and dementia.
4. Improve your blood pressure
High blood pressure in midlife increases the risk of cognitive decline in old age. Use lifestyle modification to keep your pressure as low as possible. Stay lean, exercise regularly, limit your alcohol to two drinks a day, reduce stress, and eat right.
5. Improve your blood sugar
Diabetes is an important risk factor for dementia. You can help prevent diabetes by eating right, exercising regularly, and staying lean. But if your blood sugar stays high, you’ll need medication to achieve good control.
6. Improve your cholesterol
High levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol are associated with an increased the risk of dementia. Diet, exercise, weight control, and avoiding tobacco will go a long way toward improving your cholesterol levels. But if you need more help, ask your doctor about medication.
7. Consider low-dose aspirin
Some observational studies suggest that low-dose aspirin may reduce the risk of dementia, especially vascular dementia. Ask your doctor if you are a candidate.
8. Avoid tobacco
Avoid tobacco in all its forms.
9. Don’t abuse alcohol
Excessive drinking is a major risk factor for dementia. If you choose to drink, limit yourself to two drinks a day.
10. Care for your emotions
People who are anxious, depressed, sleep-deprived, or exhausted tend to score poorly on cognitive function tests. Poor scores don’t necessarily predict an increased risk of cognitive decline in old age, but good mental health and restful sleep are certainly important goals.

Nerve Pain and Nerve Damage

Your nervous system is involved in everything your body does, from regulating your breathing to controlling your muscles and sensing heat and cold.
There are three types of nerves in the body:
Autonomic nerves. These nerves control the involuntary or partially voluntary activities of your body, including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation.
Motor nerves. These nerves control your movements and actions by passing information from your brain and spinal cord to your muscles.
Sensory nerves. These nerves relay information from your skin and muscles back to your spinal cord and brain. The information is then processed to let you feel pain and other sensations.
Because nerves are essential to all you do, nerve pain and damage can seriously affect your quality of life.

What Are the Symptoms of Nerve Pain and Nerve Damage?

With nerve damage there can be a wide array of symptoms. Which ones you may have depends on the location and type of nerves that are affected. Damage can occur to nerves in your brain and spinal cord. It can also occur in the peripheral nerves, which are located throughout the rest of your body.
Autonomic nerve damage may produce the following symptoms:
  • Inability to sense chest pain, such as angina or heart attack
  • Too much sweating (known as hyperhidrosis) or too little sweating(known as anhidrosis)
  • Lightheadedness
  • Dry eyes and mouth
  • Constipation
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Sexual dysfunction
Damage to motor nerves may produce the following symptoms:
  • Weakness
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Twitching, also known as fasciculation
  • Paralysis
Sensory nerve damage may produce the following symptoms:
  • Pain
  • Sensitivity
  • Numbness
  • Tingling or prickling
  • Burning
  • Problems with positional awareness

In some instances, people with nerve damage will have symptoms that indicate damage to two, or even three, different types of nerves. For instance, you might experience weakness and burning of your legs at the same time.

Stages of Parkinson’s Disease

If you’ve been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease then your doctor will use a rating scale to establish the stage of your disease and to track the progression. The rating scale will assess motor symptoms such as movement and tremors, as well as non-motor symptoms such as loss of smell.
download
There are five different stages of Parkinson’s disease, starting with mildest and leading up the most severe.
Stage 1
Mild symptoms such as tremors along one side of the body may be presented at this stage. Often the symptoms are mild enough not to interfere with daily life, but slight changes in walking, posture, or facial expressions may be noticed by those around them.
Stage 2
Both sides of the body may be affected by slightly worsened tremors or rigidity. Issues with posture and walking may become quite noticeable and everyday activities may be harder to achieve but patients will still be able to do things for themselves.
Stage 3
As motor symptoms become worse, patients may begin to experience loss of balance leading to falls and movement can become very slow. Although many patients can still live independently they may have difficulty in everyday activities such as eating or dressing.
Stage 4
In this later stage, symptoms are now extremely limiting. Many patients can still stand without assistance but movement is greatly impaired. Most will need help with everyday activities and will not be able to look after themselves.
Stage 5
This is the most advanced stage of the disease and most patients will experience difficulty in walking and standing, often requiring a wheelchair. Assistance will be needed in all areas of daily life as motor skills are seriously impaired. In addition, people with advanced Parkinson’s disease may also begin to suffer hallucinations.
